Life can sometimes feel overwhelming. There are so many different stakeholders in one’s environment that 24 hours just doesn’t seem like enough to get it all done⏰

You’ve got a 9-5 job which is taking up most of your day, a family that usually gets the worst of you when you finally get back home in the evening and friends you barely manage to see. Not to mention any time for yourself🙄

Why Is a Hobby Important to Achieve Work-Life Balance?

Having a hobby that you add to your calendar as you do with all the other appointments can help you to create this well-deserved time for yourself📅 And giving yourself this time out is important to recharge your batteries.

It will give you the energy you need to do everything else and to be around for all the other stakeholders in your life. Personally, I feel more balanced when I invest a bit of time in myself which makes me a better wife, a better sister, a better friend and many other things too😊

Also, a hobby helps you to switch off. I’m an expert in worrying and often took concerns from work back home. Having a hobby helped me to turn over the switch to the private mode setting as it required my full attention, leaving no time to worry about a work issue or my mum’s hospital appointment⛅

What Sparks Joy for You?

Let’s use Marie Kondo’s decluttering approach for the hobby search😉 So what kind of hobby should you do? That’s a very personal question, of course, and the options are endless 🤔

However, I hope that my recommendations below will give you some inspiration for what you could do with your rare time that brings you not only joy but also something useful to your life✨ I’ve tried many things myself and the ones listed below are my absolute favorites.

1) Sew Your Own Wardrobe and Impress Your Friends

If you’ve been to my blog before or if you follow me on Instagram, you probably know that I started sewing 8 months ago. And I love it so much💕 It’s incredible to experience the amount of work and time needed to create one simple dress and gives you more appreciation for every single garment in your wardrobe👕

Each cut and stitch you’re making requires your full attention which therefore doesn’t leave any room for worries or negative thoughts in your head✂️ Plus you will be rewarded with a lovely, handmade and useful garment or accessories in the end.

2) Become a Home-Grower and Grow Your Own Food

Even though things have been quieter around urban gardening recently, I still think it’s a great hobby to have. Nothing is more down to earth than growing your own food on a balcony, community garden or roof terrasse 🍆🥕

And it’s the perfect contrast to nowadays fast-paced and hectic world🌍 The process from getting your hands into the soil to plant the seeds up to having the vegetable in the kitchen ready to make a ratatouille just takes its time and teaches you to be patient and kind🌱 You will get your much-deserved reward when biting into your homegrown cherry tomato🍅

3) Be the Next Alicia Keys or Norah Jones and Learn to Play an Instrument

I believe that one is never too old to learn to play a new instrument. And it has so many benefits! For example, did you know that playing an instrument stimulates your brain, improves your memory and relieves stress?😃 It also increases your discipline and helps you to practice your patience.

So what are you waiting for? Focus on learning a new skill and switch off from the outside world and your worries for a couple of minutes🎹

4) Get Creative with Calligraphy

If you’re looking for a calming hobby which allows you to be creative, then this might be the one for you. Calligraphy nearly has a therapeutical effect on me🧘‍♀️ Play your favorite Spotify list in the background, light a candle and focus fully on the inkpot, the paper, and the dip pen on the table📜🖋️ Each brushstroke requires your absolute attention and helps you to switch off.

And it’s a super practical hobby too! You’ll be able to make all the Mother’s Days, birthdays and Christmas cards on your own going forward and decorate it according to your own preferences💌 Time to get all the creativity out of you and onto the paper!

5) Kick Ass! Build Up Your Confidence with Self-Defence Training

This is probably the most useful hobby ever! Especially if you’re a young woman, building up your self-confidence and knowing how to defend yourself is super important🔥 Hopefully, there will never be a situation in which you have to demonstrate your skills, but just having the knowledge of how to react in such a situation will boost your confidence and give you more power🏆

Invest this time in yourself. There are many options, such as joining a martial arts class on a regular basis (e.g. judo, kickboxing, karate, jiu-jitsu, wrestling) or just do some standard self-defense courses for a couple of weeks🤼

6) 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 – Get Moving with a Dancing Class

While all the other hobbies focus on something you do for yourself, this is one you could potentially also do together with your plus one👫 My parent’s story is the greatest example: supporting my sister and myself was always #1 priority for my parents and they set aside their own personal needs for years.

When we kids reached the age of being independent and moving out, they were looking for a hobby to reconnect as a couple and started dancing💃 It was the best thing that has ever happened to them. They bought glitter dance outfits, went to balls and were so excited the night before that they could barely sleep✨ It made them 20 years younger – at least.

There are so many different dancing types out there such as ballroom, salsa, lindy hop, country, etc. so the choice really is yours. A friend of mine started belly dancing for example and she absolutely loves it – so why not💁‍♀️
